Hello! What???

Well, hello!

Long intended hiatus.....and it was full, busy, stressful, not stressful, lots of travel, lots of changes.

For one, I had teenagers five years ago. Three of them. And now in just a few weeks I will have a grandchild that's no longer a teen. Sigh.  My roots will attest to these very things.

I digress.

It hasn't been that long ago that my spouse and I realized we are in the short strokes of our working years, and whatever shall we do with good retirement planning and two incomes? We love, LOVE to travel...so, travel, naturally!

Of course we both love Colorado and we have both had some good trips out in the last five years, both with kids and without. And there are good trips planned for the future. Spousal unit will start section-hiking the CDT this summer and I will have two trips there over summer/fall for general merriment and mayhem with friends.

BUT......

There is one place I have long wanted to travel to, a country I have read about since I was a kid arguing with my mother over jeans vs dresses. I never, ever thought this would be possible, but in May 2021 I will be traveling to......

Japan!

I am fascinated with Japan - its culture, history, language, just..everything. I want to see the lights and glitz of Tokyo, I want to relax in an onsen, just as has been done for many centuries, stroll in Kyoto with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, see Mt. Fuji, the temples...

Yesterday I was able to pay the deposit on a 9-day solo/somewhat guided trip that will encompass days in Tokyo, Kyoto, and two days in Hakone with hopefully a sighting of Fuji-san, fantastic food and lots of memories/photos. My trip facilitator has done a great job so far of putting together a fabulous itinerary for me based on a short series of questions he asked and so far it sounds like a made-for-me trip. I am so stoked!

Happy Birthday

Waking up in the morning is a little different these days. As I said to Jim on Wednesday evening as we were preparing for bed, "I woke up this morning okay, now I'm going to bed as with cancer." Caregiver becomes patient. Life has changed. I have read others talk about "life before/after" as being two different concepts and wondered if it really felt that demarcated, but the answer for me, at least for now, is yes. The life in which I took my health (and sanity?) for granted is done, now it's time to sit up and pay attention. Half-time is over, it's time to play serious ball. This morning I received a lovely slap upside the head that was sorely needed. Miss Peyton  turns 7 today. Four years ago Peyton was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and is now a survivor. To my eye there are no physical reminders of what Peyton went through, but as I looked at her birthday pictures today I could hear her tell me to get over myself, to get on with it a...

Okay, so....

I haven't cried yet. Am I supposed to? Will it make me feel better? What's the standard protocol here? I know the things to say to family members and patients when they  have cancer, but what's the etiquette for the patient herself? I don't want this to be the All Cancer, All The Time blog, but damn it, I'm out of my element here. If someone has a clue, I have a whole bunch of quarters.
